Built in approximately 1835 by Mr. Weaver, the site was originally a private home, but has long been known as an Inn. The bar area and our front dining room are original to the building. Our back dining room and our banquet room were added in the 1970’s, by then owner, Woody Kleppinger. Originally, the site was known as Haye’s Tavern. Built in 1755 by John Hayes, on what was then called the Kings Highway. Ben Franklin is said to have stayed here. Our information says that the Inn was also a Post Office. This was a big reason for his visits. A fire destroyed the building in the 19th century, it was then rebuilt and incorporated the original bake oven. I have been told that the foundation for the kitchen is part of the original structure. Hayes Mill was located across the Catasauqua Creek. This also housed a tannery.
We believe the Inn is also home to a few spirits. Many customers have experienced a feeling of additional guests at their table. We have had ghost hunters investigate the Inn twice and they believe the Inn to be haunted. Please feel free to tell us your story or experience.
The area surrounding the Inn was known as the Craig Settlement. This was the first English speaking settlement in what is now the Lehigh Valley. Close by, you will also find a lot of history concerning the Walking Purchase.
